Psalm 23:7 Thy Rod and Thy Staff comfort me.

Though I walk through the alley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou are with me. Thy rod and thy staff comfort me.

What sweet words those are? What comfort they bring.

Comfort in knowing that God is with me and his rod is protecting me and his staff is comforting me.

A rod is a weapon that the shepherd carries with him at all times, it never leaves his hand. It is ready for him to use if an enemy comes after his sheep. It is something small but powerful enough to kill.

Our shepherd Jesus also carries a rod ready to hurl at the enemy who tries to attack us (the sheep).  He also carries a staff to comfort us and to gently guide us back to him when we start to stray. He also uses the crook of the staff to gently pick us up when we get stuck in the cares of this world.

These words also comfort me because they tell me that when my time comes for me to go home my shepherd is there with me, guiding me and I have nothing to fear. I like to think he will be holding my hand all the way just like he did with my mom.

Right before she passed away, I went to see her in the hospital and when I got there, she told me that there was a man standing behind me and that man was Jesus. I believe he was there although I didn’t see him.

Even when she told me to tell him she was not ready yet. I believe he smiled at her and told her “it’s okay, I am here with you.” I never seen him but she did and he was ready to take her home, just like he will be there when we are ready. Knowing this is what gives me comfort and peace.

My prayer is may you find comfort and peace in knowing God will be with you too. May you find rest when you lean on the Lord.
